Campaign on the rights of woman survivors of violence and their children to access support and protection
WAVE STEP UP 2016
Since the beginning of 2016, the WAVE Office has been conducting several campaign activities at the European level:
WAVE Training Institute Plans Activities for Step Up! 2017
Included in WAVE’s work to improve service provision and ensure that women receive the kind of human rights-based support they require to resume a life free from violence, the WAVE Training Institute aims at uniting and strengthening the capacity of experts working in women’s support services, establishing common quality standards for the support of survivors of violence and their children in Europe, and creating synergies between professionals working in the field.
Before launching the pan-European Step Up! Campaign on 25 May 2016, the WAVE office worked in close collaboration with the different Member organisations to assure that all interested members could join the campaign. Additionally, organisations who are not Members of the WAVE Network have since joined the campaign, further assuring a Europe-wide impact of Step Up! efforts.
• Coordinating Campaigners Meeting
During the 2016 WAVE Coordinating Committee Meeting in April, campaigners were invited to join the country delegates and one day was dedicated to furthering communication within the Network on campaigning ideas and to finding activities the campaigners from the different countries were passionate about.
• Launching Campaign
On 25 May 2016, with the support of UN Women Orange Day, the WAVE Network launched the Step Up! Campaign. Activities in the different countries included demonstrations, viral videos and press conferences. Reports on these efforts were disseminated by the WAVE office via different social media outlets, ensuring a wide-spread and significant spotlight on the launch of the campaign. Additionally, the WAVE office sent out a Press Release May 2016 and personal letters to key European stakeholders, such as members of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament, including:
- Daniela Bankier – European Commission, Head of Equality between Women and Men Unit - Dubravka Šimonović – United Nations, Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, its Causes and Consequences - Iratxe García Pérez – FEMM Committee, Chair - Johanna Nelles – Council of Europe, Head of Gender Equality Division - Ulrike Lunacek - European Parliament, Vice President - Věra Jourová – European Commission, Commissioner of Justice, Consumers and Equality Commission
• Step Up! Success at 18th WAVE Conference in Berlin
During the 18th WAVE Conference in Berlin, Germany from 19-21 October 2016, the WAVE Step Up! Campaign gained momentum and publicity with not only national campaigners and WAVE Members, but also governemental bodies and other public agencies in attendance.
• 21 June 2016 – Call for Participation in the Youth Video Award!
In June, the WAVE office released a call for participation in the Step Up! Campaign activity, Youth Video Award. The Youth Video Award engages groups of young people (18-25 years old), youth organizations, (film-) schools and media departments of universities to participate actively, with the main goal to raise awareness of violence against women and encourage survivors to seek support. Therefore, the video content should be focused on empowerment of survivors. It can address all forms of violence against women and should be linked to the issue of access to support services for all women.
